FireWire is Apple Computer's name for IEEE 1394, a new standard for connecting devices to your personal computer. Also known as Sony's I Link, FireWire is simply a high speed port that lets you connect computer peripherals and consumer electronics to your computer without the need to restart.
FireWire is similar to Universal Serial Bus (USB) in many ways. While USB is ideal for slower-speed input devices such as joysticks, mice and keyboards, FireWire's speed and ease of use make it the best choice for use with devices where high amounts of data are being transferred, such as FireWire capable webcams, cd-recorders, hard drives and networking.
